Mit dem Quartett bei der Jazztime in Hildesheim
Was für ein besonderer Abend in der Heimatstadt von Thomas Quasthoff.
Mit unserem Quartett durften wir bei der diesjährigen Jazztime im restlos ausverkauften Theater in Hildesheim auftreten – und irgendwie lag an diesem Abend etwas Besonderes in der Luft. Vielleicht, weil Thomas nach vielen Jahren wieder in seiner Geburtsstadt auf der Bühne stand. Vielleicht, weil so viele Menschen im Publikum eine ganz persönliche Verbindung zu ihm haben. Oder einfach, weil man spüren konnte: Dieser Abend bedeutete vielen Menschen etwas.
Die *Hildesheimer Allgemeine Zeitung* schrieb am nächsten Morgen treffend: „Hildesheim huldigt dem bedeutendsten Musiker der Stadt.“ Und tatsächlich – diese besondere Atmosphäre war vom ersten Ton an spürbar.
Ein echtes Geschenk war für uns auch, diese erste Station gemeinsam mit Simon Oslender an den Tasten spielen zu dürfen. Simon gehört längst zu den spannendsten Musikern der aktuellen deutschen Jazzszene und wurde jüngst mit dem WDR Jazzpreis ausgezeichnet. Vor allem aber bringt er in unsere Musik etwas ganz Besonderes hinein: Klangfarben, Wärme, Energie – und manchmal genau die richtige musikalische Überraschung im richtigen Moment.
Auch die Konzertkritik hob gerade das besondere Zusammenspiel der Band hervor:
„Die Band hat maßgeblichen Anteil daran, dass das Konzert im Gedächtnis bleiben wird. Der Klang ist unglaublich transparent, kein Ton ist zu viel.“
Ein schöneres Kompliment kann man sich als Band kaum wünschen – und ein großes Lob gilt dabei natürlich auch unserem „fünften Mann“ im Quartett: Dominik Arnold, der unseren Sound in die unterschiedlichsten Räume dieser Welt transportiert, formt und begleitet. Gerade diese Transparenz und Feinheit im Klang entstehen nicht zufällig.
Und natürlich bleibt auch das Drumherum in Erinnerung: viele herzliche Begegnungen, liebe Menschen im Backstagebereich und ein Team rund um Waldemar Lorenz, das uns mit großer Herzlichkeit begleitet und uns sprichwörtlich jeden Wunsch von den Lippen abgelesen hat. Solche Menschen im Hintergrund sind ein Geschenk – denn sie ermöglichen uns das, worum es am Ende geht: uns ganz auf die Musik konzentrieren zu dürfen.
Hier folgen noch ein paar Eindrücke vom Soundcheck und eines Abends, der uns sicher noch lange in Erinnerung bleiben wird.

With the Quartet at Jazztime in Hildesheim
What a special evening in Thomas Quasthoff’s hometown.
We had the pleasure of performing with our quartet at this year’s Jazztime Festival in the completely sold-out theatre in Hildesheim – and somehow, there was something special in the air that night. Perhaps because Thomas was back on stage in his hometown after many years. Perhaps because so many people in the audience share a personal connection with him. Or simply because you could feel that this evening meant something to many.
The *Hildesheimer Allgemeine Zeitung* captured the atmosphere beautifully in its headline the next morning: **“Hildesheim pays tribute to the city’s greatest musician.”** And indeed, this unique atmosphere could be felt from the very first note.
For us, Hildesheim also marked the beginning of a small concert journey in May: from northern Germany to the beautiful Benedictine Abbey of Melk on the Blue Danube, and finally to Bad Schönau in the picturesque “Bucklige Welt” region of Lower Austria.
It was also a real gift to begin this journey together with Simon Oslender on piano and keyboards. Simon has long been one of the most exciting musicians of the younger German jazz scene and was recently awarded the WDR Jazz Prize. More importantly, he brings something truly special to our music: colours, warmth, energy – and sometimes exactly the right musical surprise at exactly the right moment.
This quartet line-up is something quite special in itself: voice, trombone, guitar and piano – entirely without bass or drums. Somehow, this creates a very unique openness and transparency in the sound. Everyone listens closely to one another, every note has room to breathe – and from this comes a special musical energy that made the evening in Hildesheim unforgettable for us.
The concert review also highlighted the unique interplay within the band:
> “The band plays a major part in making the concert memorable. The sound is incredibly transparent; not a single note is too much.”
As a band, one could hardly wish for a greater compliment. And of course, special credit also goes to our “fifth man” in the quartet: Dominik Arnold, who shapes and carries our sound into concert halls around the world. Transparency and sonic detail like this never happen by accident.
And of course, what remains in our memories are also the many warm encounters, wonderful people backstage, and the fantastic team around Waldemar Lorenz, who looked after us so generously and seemed to anticipate every wish before we even had to ask. Having people like this behind the scenes is a true gift – because they allow us to focus entirely on what matters most: the music.
Here are a few impressions from an evening we will surely remember for a long time to come.
